If you're looking for something closer to how FB works, you should check out mewe.com. With heaps of people joining from Google+ shutting down there's a pretty good bunch of people there.

There's a group there called MeWe Welcome (or "it's not a ghost town") that was set up for incoming G+ people. It's an introduction place and has some pretty good people there to help you get started.
